Cross-cut saw? Cutting to length also works without a blade, noise and sawdust.

The problem

A cross-cut saw solves only a quarter of your problem. And makes noise and sawdust doing it.

You are looking for a cross-cut saw because you want to cut poles, branches and metre-length wood to stove length. The Spaltmeister does exactly that, just differently: it shears the wood between two blades instead of sawing it. No screaming saw blade, no sawdust in the yard, no resharpening. And where the cross-cut saw is finished, your work only begins: splitting, picking up, loading. The Spaltmeister does all four steps in one pass, for wood up to 21 cm in diameter. If you only want to cut to length because the wood is thin enough, you cut without splitting.

your benefits

What the Spaltmeister can do that your cross-cut saw can’t:

The cross-cut saw saws. The Spaltmeister cuts and splits mechanically, no saw, no hydraulics. Round wood up to 21 cm goes in, ready-to-burn logs come out, over the 3.4-metre conveyor straight into the BigBag or trailer. Cutting only works too: cut without splitting, for poles that need no splitter. No saw blade, no chain, no sawdust, far less noise. From 35 hp tractor and 300 rpm PTO. For logs over 21 cm the chainsaw stays in the game, and for most people that is the smaller part of the work.

No hydraulics

Hydraulic splitters are prone to breakdowns. Because our system is so simple, there are virtually no points of failure.

Only 1.6 m wide

With the conveyor folded in, you can drive on normal roads without worrying about width restrictions.

3.4 m conveyor belt

Your freshly split wood goes exactly where it should: into the BigBag, the trailer, or simply onto a pile.

680 kg weight

At just 680 kg, the Spaltmeister is easy to move into position. Stable footing on every job – and light enough for any tractor.

35 HP minimum

Your tractor only needs 35 HP minimum. If you try to split wood that’s too hard, the tractor simply stalls – no damage, just keep going.

Max. 540 RPM

Ready to run at just 300 RPM – a standard 540 PTO is more than enough. The Spaltmeister operates in the efficient RPM range and saves fuel – ideal for working with any standard tractor.

The MEHOMA 4-in-1 firewood method: replaces cross-cut saw, splitter, conveyor and manual labour

Instead of setting up, rearranging and maintaining four machines, you hitch the Spaltmeister to the tractor and get going. One cutting splitter, one pass, one day, your whole year’s supply. And because nothing saws, the yard stays clean: no sawdust, no chain oil, no blade to resharpen. You can sell the cross-cut saw, or give it to the neighbour who isn’t there yet.

who is behind mehoma?

We are Freya and Johannes, a family with a house, a farm, kids and very little time. As committed wood burners we know: making firewood with conventional equipment takes weeks, time that is often missing in everyday life.
Since the bark beetle calamity, almost all the wood we get is thin – tedious to process, but far too good to leave lying around. Johannes brings years of experience as a forester. Today we manage our forest sustainably for our family and the next generations. In 2022 we discovered a machine concept in Finland that fascinated us: the wood was done in one day, but the quality wasn’t right. So together with a machine builder we developed a new, practical solution: the MEHOMA Spaltmeister 3400. MEHOMA stands for MEin HOlz MAchen (making my own wood) – efficient, well thought out and with joy. What used to take three weeks, we now finish in one day. And the best part: we pass this solution on.
So that more people can leave the stress of firewood behind and win back time for life. “Our generation needs practical solutions to really shape life in the countryside.”

faq

frequently asked questions

How long do the blades last, and how often do they need sharpening?

The blades are made from Hardox 600 – highly wear-resistant and built for continuous use. Under normal firewood conditions, they’ll last for many years. Depending on the wood and frequency of use, a seasonal check and light touch-up sharpening are usually all it takes.

Can I use it on wood with nails or stones in it?

Absolutely! Since there’s no saw to dull, the Hardox 600 blades handle nails and small stones with ease – ideal for turning demolition wood into clean, ready-to-burn firewood.

I have special requirements or need accessories – is that possible?

Yes, of course! Just write to us using the contact form and tell us what you need. We’ll get back to you promptly and find the best solution together.

Can I try it out?

Sure! By appointment any time at our place in 98743 Gräfenthal, Germany. Too far? Across Germany and Austria there is usually a Spaltmeister running at a customer or partner within an hour's drive. Get in touch via the contact form: in the first call we check whether the machine fits your wood and your workflow, then we arrange a demo near you. That way we only take up our partners' time when it really fits.

Is there a warranty?

Yes – 1 year for professional users, 2 years for private users. And even after that, we won’t leave you hanging: spare parts are available, help is fast, and our know-how is always included for free.

Is it possible to rent a machine to make my firewood?

Yes, in many cases! Contact us – often our demo units are available for rent, and some of our customers also offer their Spaltmeister for rental.

I have another question

No problem – we’re happy to help! Just send us your question via the contact form. We’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Why no hydraulics?

Because it's simpler and safer: the Spaltmeister runs on any PTO, no matter how old the tractor. No hydraulics, no oil, no hoses, no leaks. Just pure mechanics: robust, reliable, and easy to maintain.

Why is there no feed belt?

Because in many cases, it causes more trouble than it’s worth: feed belts wear out quickly, are costly to replace, and struggle with crooked or poorly debranched logs. They also limit flexibility – you can’t trim thin wood manually or rotate logs to quarter thick pieces. And that’s exactly where the Spaltmeister shines: maximum control, maximum versatility.

How big is the Spaltmeister?

Compact and garage-friendly: in transport mode, it measures 1.60 m wide, 1.80 m long, and 1.90 m high. Without the feed hopper, it takes up just 1.60 × 1.10 m of floor space.

Which tractor do I need?

One with a PTO and at least 35 hp. The Spaltmeister runs from 300 rpm, a standard 540 PTO is plenty. No hydraulic connections needed, the machine is purely mechanical. At 680 kg it sits safely on small tractors too. If you ever catch a piece that is too tough, the tractor simply stalls and you carry on without damage.

How heavy is the Spaltmeister?

It weighs 680 kg. Its solid build ensures a stable stand – even without being mounted to the tractor’s three-point hitch.

Does the wood bounce during processing?

No – not when used properly. If the wood is placed cleanly onto the blades, it moves only slightly and can be guided by hand. Noticeable bouncing typically only occurs if the blades are damaged or misaligned.

How many cubic metres does the Spaltmeister process per hour?

It depends on log length and crew, so here are the real numbers: at 20 to 25 cm, 3 to 4 stacked cubic metres per hour alone, 5 to 6 with two people. At 33 cm, 5 to 6 alone, 7 to 9 with two. At 50 cm, 5 to 7 alone, 10 and more with two. All figures are stacked cubic metres, not loose volume (one stacked metre is roughly 1.4 loose). Our record is 20 stacked metres in one hour: two people, 50 cm, straight 17 cm logs, not a single empty cycle. Sporty, not everyday.

From what diameter is the Spaltmeister worth it, and where is the limit?

There is no technical lower limit: whatever you pick up, you can process, even hazel rods. It just gets slower at 5 cm because each piece carries less wood. The machine is at its best around 17 cm: plenty of wood per piece, still easy to guide with one hand. The upper limit is 21 cm. Anything thicker stays with your splitter or firewood processor, and for most people that is the smaller part of the work.

Can I process hardwood with it?

Yes – hardwoods like beech, oak, hornbeam, and maple can be processed continuously without issue. In Italy, one Spaltmeister is even in nonstop use processing holm oak.

What do I do with wood over 21 cm?

That stays with your splitter or firewood processor. The Spaltmeister is not an all-round machine, it is built for the wood under 21 cm that makes up 60 to 70 percent of your work. Many of our customers run exactly this split: processor or splitter for the thick logs, Spaltmeister for crown wood, thinnings and poles. The thick logs are done in ten minutes, the rest used to be the time sink.

Where do you deliver?

Across the entire EU, right to your yard, via our logistics partner. Transit time 4 to 8 working days. Whether you add transport or collect from us in 98743 Gräfenthal, Germany, is up to you.

What does the Spaltmeister 3400 cost?

The base machine starts at 7,990 € net, collected from our yard in 98743 Gräfenthal, Germany (in Germany 9,508.10 € incl. 19 % VAT), Europe-wide. Depending on your needs, add PTO shaft, transport, on-site training and support. We put that together individually, because a forestry contractor with 300 cubic metres needs something different from a woodland owner with 30. We work out what you really need when we talk, then you get a quote that fits your wood. Financing is available.

Is it worth it at 30, 50 or 80 cubic metres a year?

Count your hours, not the brochure. With chainsaw and splitter, most people need 1 to 2 hours per cubic metre of thin wood. 50 cubic metres is 50 to 100 hours, ten to twenty Saturdays. With the Spaltmeister at 33 cm it is about 8 to 10 hours, one or two Saturdays. On top of that, crown wood and thinnings that used to stay in the forest or go into the chipper suddenly become sellable firewood. Whether it pays off for you depends on how much wood you get, what your hour is worth and whether you sell. That is exactly what we work through together, honestly, even if the answer turns out to be no. For your own numbers up front: samstage.spaltmeister.com, our weekend calculator (in German).

How long does delivery take?

Usually the Spaltmeister is at your place within 14 days. The transport itself takes 4 to 8 working days.

Does it create a lot of splinters or waste?

The Spaltmeister doesn’t produce sawdust. Depending on the type and moisture of the wood, some splinters may result from splitting – but no more than with other methods. The minimal fine fraction is perfect for kindling, since it’s sawdust-free and dries quickly.
